Art Journaling

Spilling Life Onto The Page

Course Description:
Journals have long been a private sanctuary for the expression of one’s truest thoughts and as a wonderful tool for coping with life’s trials. However, simply writing down your thoughts day after day can become stale and unfulfilling. In this class you will learn to give your journal new life and find renewed enthusiasm for creative expression.  No longer are you confined to simply writing down your thoughts, you can collage, create, destroy, draw, and paint as well. In addition, you will learn tips and techniques for fitting journaling into busy schedules. Prompts and project ideas are provided, but feel free to follow whatever paths your heart and mind long to wander. Life is a multi-sensory experience, now your journaling can be too! Aspiring journalers and seasoned writers welcome.

Materials Provided:
Supplies available to share include acrylic & watercolor paint, gesso, brushes, pens, colored & drawing pencils, markers, scissors, craft blades, cutting mats, adhesives, magazines for collage materials, papers, rulers, etc. Supplies will vary from class to class.

Materials Required For Students To Bring:
A journal, sketchbook, or other surface to work on. A watercolor paper sketch book is great for many media types. A thin papered notebook (such as drawing paper sketch books, lined journals, moleskine notebooks) is good for illustrative work and will hold up to some acrylic and collage work, but the paper will buckle. For more information on journal choices please read the choosing a journal page.

It is also strongly recommended for you to bring any collage materials, ephemera, photographs, or art supplies (pencils, pens, paints, etc.) you may already have and wish to use. Using items that have personal meaning will greatly enhance your art journaling experience.

Cost & Supply Fee:
Since I teach through art centers and community education centers course cost and supply fees vary depending on the location offering the class. Please see specific course listings below for detailed cost information.
